A total of 5,216 American soldiers have been killed in the wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan, 42 since the Council's last meeting. The event, a partnership between the City of Pleasanton
and the Pleasanton Unified School District, will be held at the Fairground on October 25
Mayor Hosterman thanked Ms. Truax and offered to host Ms. Truax and her troop on a visit of
City Hall.
MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL
Councilmember Thorne called staff's attention to SB 1918, a federal bill hosted by Senator
Dodd and cosponsored by the National Committee for Economic Development Policy. The bill
provides considerable funds for local communities working with neighboring agencies to
develop projects, such as certain TVTC projects.
Vice -Mayor Cook Kallio said she would be in Washington with students next week and offered
to personally deliver any materials to Senator Dodd's office.
COUNCIL REPORTS
Councilmember McGovern reported that she and Councilmember Thorne attended an East Bay
Regional Parks liaison meeting and that discussion focused on access to public lands,
additional lands that could be acquired, Shadow Cliffs, Alamo Creek, and a joint development
dog park near the BMX park.
Councilmember Thorne said the joint partnership should be very beneficial and that potential
plans for Shadow Cliffs and the Adobe area are very exciting.
Mayor Hosterman reported attending the Annual Leadership Conference of the U.S. Conference
of Mayors in Seattle. She stated that over 1,000 cities signed on to Mayor Nichols' (Seattle)
Climate Protection Agreement and that the City of Pleasanton was named as one of only 34
cities to be the greenest in America.
ADJOURN to a Joint Workshop of the City Council and Library Commission
Mayor Hosterman convened the joint workshop and thanked staff and the Library Commission
for all their time and work on the Civic Center Master Plan and potential library expansion.
Mr. Fialho briefly outlined the staff report, adding that this process morphs five Council priorities
into one discussion as follows: the Civic Center master planning process, the library expansion
process, long -term scope as it pertains to a permanent location for the Ace Train, mixed -use
development, and an opportunity for economic development in the downtown area.
