resolution but stressed that it does not arise from a failure to sympathize or empathize with the
issue.
Councilmember McGovern said the Council represents everyone in Pleasanton, not their own
individual positions as council members. She has never met anyone who thinks war is to be
applauded but also cannot assume to speak for the beliefs of every member of Pleasanton. She
suggested there is more taking place than the public realizes and that those in a position to end the
war have not done so for a reason.
Councilmember Thorne said his opinion has not changed since the last time the Council discussed
the issue. He said he supports the United States Military more than anyone on the Council, he
attends all homecomings to welcome soldiers and does not appreciate the characterizations shared
tonight.
Councilmember Sullivan said he personally believes the majority of Pleasanton opposes the war
and noted the Council regularly votes on issues without knowing the stance of every citizen. He
said it is the Council's duty to support the people of the community and that passing a resolution
opposing the war would offer that support. He acknowledged that no member of the Council wishes
to discuss this repeatedly but said that as long as the public asks for support, he will initiate this
discussion.
Vice -Mayor Cook- Kallio agreed that the discussion and the comments of Ms. Dowding and Mr.
Norman are important and said the latter may be more so than any resolution.
Councilmember McGovern said she greatly respects Ms. Dowding and Mr. Norman and what they
bring to the community.
COUNCIL REPORTS None
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:11 p.m.
Respectfully s mitted,
Care Diaz N3
City C rk
City Council Minutes Page 11 of 11 August 18, 2009
