Shelving capacity has been reached and the current collection, at 2.7 volumes
per capita is a challenge. A 62% net increase in the overall collection size
294,880 items is recommended to meet Pleasanton's needs through the year
2030. A collection of this size will offer the community an average 3.7 volumes
per capita at population build -out, a service level that is well within Library
industry planning guidelines.
Programming for children, families and adults is a prime Library service priority in
Pleasanton and one of the Library's strengths. Since 1999, annual attendance at
Library programs has grown from 5,393 to over 30,000 people. The needs
assessment recommends two large meeting rooms to hold 200 and 150 people,
a storytelling space in the children's area that can seat 60 and eight small group
study and tutoring rooms.
The existing Library's reader seat capacity is 140 seats. A total of 364
reader /study seats are recommended for Pleasanton, to offer 4.6 seats per 1,000
when the community reaches its build -out population.
Quiet study space is needed and should be provided in a separate, acoustically
controlled room, perhaps combined with the local history and genealogy
collections.
Public computers are in high demand and increasing the number of computers
for public access, class rooms, and homework has been identified.
Library Technical Study/ Conceptual Library Design/ Preliminary Cost Analysis
(Attachment A)
At the request of the Library Commission, in February of 2006, the City Council directed
staff to seek architectural services for a feasibility study that would include a technical
assessment regarding an expansion of the Pleasanton Library and a pre- schematic
design of potential expansion options including a new facility. The contract was awarded
to Field Paoli Architecture of San Francisco.
Field Paoli completed its initial feasibility analysis in February 2007 after extensive
review of the existing library building, site, and infrastructure and its study concluded
that the current library building could not accommodate additional stories but that it
could be expanded to the north. During the course of this work, the Library Commission
and staff requested the architect look at additional options including the potential for
constructing a new library at Bernal and Main. In response, the architect completed
numerous site plan options and the Commission ultimately identified two (with separate
parking variations) that met the purpose of the study. Both options have alternatives
that include a parking structure. A summary of the options is as follows:
