recommending approval of the contract with San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. The
resources that this collaboration provides are as follows:
Professional Theater Staff San Francisco Shakespeare Festival is run by
Executive Director, Toby Leavitt and her staff, providing years of administration
and creative theatrical experiences. A professional Stage Manager is assigned
to each show, coordinating auditions and rehearsals as well as all of the
production elements. Contract designers for the show are hired from their
connections within the pool of artistic theater talent in the Bay Area. This would
include set designers, costume designers, lighting designers and props artisans.
In addition, SF Shakes contracts the set -build with an area scene shop to
execute the set, deliver and install the set as designed.
Facility Resources SF Shakes has extensive shop space and costume
storage at their warehouse in San Francisco. This allows them to reduce
expenses when constructing sets or props for a show. As well, costumes from
storage can often be reused in new productions with minor modifications,
contributing to savings in that department as well.
One Stop Shop SF Shakes has all the resources and connections to provide
all elements of a theatrical production. Because of the many different facets of a
theatrical production, it is necessary to use a company that can provide and
execute appropriately and to the standards set by Civic Arts Stage Company. A
company that can provide all these services is essential to reduce staff time in
contracting multiple sources.
Theatrical production services are quite unique. To contract with a reliable company
that can provide all the appropriate elements in support of Civic Arts productions is a
great asset. San Francisco Shakespeare Festival is recommended as the sole source
for these services for the reasons mentioned above. In addition, the following items are
deciding factors:
Civic Arts Stage Company requires that its production team is able to work with
the various specifications of the Amador Theater. SF Shakes is used to working
within the parameters of other venues as they do not have a venue of their own.
The Amador Theater requires all production elements to be mobile to allow for its
busy schedule. As all SF Shakes summer productions are on tour, the company
is focused on creating design elements that are mobile.
Civic Arts Stage Company is in need of production support during a season that
mirrors the school year. Because the primary focus of SF Shakes' own season is
a summer tour, they are more adaptable and available to work within our Civic
Arts season.
