BACKGROUND
For the last ten (10) years, the City's Civic Arts Department has been producing
theatrical shows as part of its Civic Arts Presents series at the Amador Theater.
Previously, Civic Arts staff has relied on staff from Support Services and their resources
to facilitate the construction of the sets for the productions on the Amador stage. With
the current plan for two (2) to three (3) shows per season, this effort by Support
Services is not sustainable.
Concurrently, the City has been presenting the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival at
Amador Valley Community Park each summer for the last ten (10) years. Their annual
offering from the Shakespeare repertoire as part of Free Shakespeare in the Park has
grown in attendance so that it has become a tradition for many Pleasanton and Tri-
Valley families. SF Shakes is a professional company that has developed a reputation
for quality productions. Last year, with knowledge of their resources and facilities, City
staff approached SF Shakes about assisting with the Civic Arts fall production of The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Design and execution of the sets, costumes, lighting and
stage management for the show were all products of SF Shakes staff and their
contractors.
After a second collaboration on the Civic Arts production of Ramona Quimby in 2009, it
became evident that the services offered by SF Shakes were invaluable.
As envisioned, for the musical production of Cinderella, San Francisco Shakespeare
Festival will offer expanded services to our own Civic Arts Stage Company, such as the
following:
casting and audition coordination
stage direction
musical direction
musical accompaniment
stage management
stage and run crew
props design and coordination
costume design and coordination
set design and construction
lighting design and coordination
additional marketing tools to promote the production
DISCUSSION
Pleasanton continues to have a need for dramatic acting opportunities, as evidenced by
the large response to audition calls for Civic Arts shows and programs. Summer Drama
Camp was again sold out this year, and the audition list for Charlotte's Web had over
100 registrants. The proposed collaboration with SF Shakes will allow City staff to
continue to provide these opportunities, benefiting the budding community actor as well
as bringing quality family entertainment to the Amador Theater. As a result, staff is
Page 2 of 4
