BACKGROUND
This pedestrian path runs along a suggested route to school and would provide an off
street path for both pedestrians and bicyclists to get to the elementary and middle
schools located on Case Avenue. The subject project was authorized in the 2008/2009
Capital Improvement Program. The project consists of removal and disposal of existing
fence, bollards, and gates, and construction of a 700 foot asphalt concrete paved
pedestrian /bicycle path along the south side of Valley Avenue between Case Avenue
and Sunol Boulevard.
Bids
Sealed bids for this project were opened on June 30, 2009. There were a total of twelve
(12) bids received with bid amounts ranging between $45,955 and $87,295 (see
Attachment 2). The engineer's estimate for this project was $70,000.
Staff reviewed the bid submitted by the apparent low bidder, Soto Brothers Paving
Company, Inc., and found it to be in order. Past work performed by this contractor was
also verified to be satisfactory. Staff recommends award of the construction contract to
the lowest responsible bidder, Soto Brothers Paving Company, Inc.
Budget
Project funding and estimated expenditures are presented in Attachment 3 to this
report.
Staff is recommending a 20% project contingency ($9,200) in order to accommodate
other necessary adjustments that may conflict with the construction of the project.
Schedule
The proposed schedule for the subject project is as follows:
Approval of Plans and Specifications and Award of Contract: July 21, 2009
Start of Construction: August 2009
End of Construction: September 2009
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approv by:
FA 04— 1
Brian Dolan David P.
