Meetings of the Task Force have been open to the public for observation, and
for comments. Task Force members have spent countless hours over two years, visit-
ing sites, attending meetings, conceptualizing, reviewing, and commenting on the dif-
ferent aspects of the Master Plan. Their input has been essential to the creation of
recommendations that reflect the varied interests of the citizens of Pleasanton.
The Task Force represents many aspects of the community. Members include
liaisons with the City Council and Commissions, as well as downtown area and city-
wide interests (Downtown Association, Chamber of Commerce, Convention Visi-
tors Bureau, and Lion's Club). In addition, the Task Force includes representatives of
the Youth Commission, and five citizens-at-large.
MASTER PLAN PROCESS AND CHRONOLOGY
The process of preparing this Master Plan began in 1996, when the Parks Recre-
ation Commission identified the need for funding park renovation projects at Way-
side, DeLucchi, and Main St Green Parks, all in the downtown area. The
Commission determined that a comprehensive Master Plan, including the parks and
trails in the downtown area, would be more appropriate than approaching each park
separately.
In August 1997, the Parks Recreation Commission recommended to the City
Council the approval of a Scope of Work for the Downtown Parks Trails Master
Plan. In September, the Council authorized staff to proceed. By Fall 1997, the land-
scape architecture firm of Richard Larson Associates had been selected from a field
of eight firms to lead the Master Plan process and prepare the final report. The City
Council appointed a Task Force of citizens to provide community input and assist in
developing the Master Plan's recommendations.
BACKGROUND
6
