DRAFT MASTER PLAN FOR THE DPTS

The 1960's fire station addition, which is nOt well suited to accommodate the pro-
posed program spaces, would be removed and replaced by a new addition. Between
the historic firehouse to remain and the proposed addition would be a new two- story
lobby space. This lobby would house a cafe and some of the gallery space. Windows
opening onto Railroad Avenue and Wayside Park would provide natural light and cre-
ate a strong visual link between downtown and the park. This lobby would be the
meeting place of the old and new buildings. Entry to the lobby would be both from
the street and the park.

The rest of the first floor of the new addition would be a large multipurpose room
and its support spaces. This would open to the lobby, and also have large doors to
connect the space to an outdoor performance area. The backstage areas would have
direct access to the parking lot to facilitate loading and unloading of large items such
as scenery and props.

On the second level of the addition would be the multi-purpose spaces and hall-
ways, circling the lobby and connecting with the upper level of the historic fire house.
A new elevator would provide access to both levels and could be designed as a tower
to provide a visual focal point.

OUTLINE BUILDING PROGRAM

The process of preparing the design recommendations for Fire Station No. 1
included development of a set of prototypical rooms and building spaces, each large
enough to accommodate rhe uses proposed. These possible building components were
combined to form a preliminary Building Program, with a total of 12,000 SF- 15,000
SF of building space needed to fulfill the program.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BUILDING PROGRAM INCLUDE:

. LOBBy/COMMUNITY ARTS INFORMATION CENTER/CAFE - 1,350 SQ. FT.

This high-ceiling space would serve as a lobby and gathering space. A cafe, com-
munity arts information displays, and ticket sales would be included to attract people
from throughout the downtown area and Wayside Park. The lobby would visually
connect Railroad Avenue with Wayside Park, allowing passersby to observe activities
inside the Old Fire Station, and those inside the building to observe activities in the
park.

. DISPLAy/ExHIBIT GALLERY SPACE - 1,500 sQ. FT.

The Display/Exhibit room(s) would provide a venue for displaying a wide range
of visual arts. The space could be opened or closed-off from the lobby. Gallery light-
ing and wall hanging systems would be included.

FIRE STATION No. I DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS
29

II'. II I
