Goals for Poet Laureate Position July, 2009 June, 2010
Deborah Grossman
/sun/ To inspire people in Pleasanton and the Tri- Valley to connect —or reconnect —with
their literary roots by engaging in poetry
In a way that stretches imagination and nurtures a supportive
learning environment
So that community spirit is enriched by many poetic voices in a vibrant city.
Goals Projects
Lead and support on -going Civic Arts programs such as the Pleasanton Poetry,
Prose the Arts Festival and Century House Poetry readings.
I welcome the participation and partnership with previous Poets Laureates and the Bay Area
poetry community to advance these projects.
Interview key constituencies in Pleasanton to identify target audiences, format and
content for possible new programs or changes to existing ones.
I'll speak with team members of the District's schools, the Pleasanton Library, Civic Arts
staff, senior center, and other community groups such as the Tri- Valley Writers branch,
California Writers Club. I will review new programs with Civic Arts and implement.
Build the Tri Valley community of poets and literary arts by collaboration with
Livermore and other area Poet Laureate programs.
Where it benefits Pleasanton, I'll leverage ideas and resources with Livermore, Dublin and
other Poets Laureates. With these partnerships, we can coordinate readings and workshops to
draw well -known poets. I'll partner with community poets to provide coverage for city events
if schedule conflicts arise. I'll also support programs of previous Pleasanton Poets Laureate
and other literary groups in Pleasanton.
Activities
Lead a program at the Senior Center or senior housing facility to encourage mature
adults to write and /or read poetry.
I will identify ways to include seniors in the city's poetry heritage. This may entail visiting
with seniors before the December holidays to read poetry or facilitate a "Make a Poem"
w orkshop targeted as a gift for family and friends.
Youth outreach
Poet Laureate Martha Meltzer has established outstanding poetry programs in Pleasanton
schools. I welcome Martha's suggestions and support for these programs. I'll participate in
poetry programs and advocate for creative writing and poetry with students, teachers and
parents.
I'll continue to serve as a resource for other community groups such as the Brownies. Girl
Scouts and Boy Scouts to support their learning programs.
