OF PLEASANTON
STAFF
!tEPOBT

October 18, 1977

HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL
Pleasanton, California

Department of Field Services and Division of Engineering Services
POsition Classification Study

Members of the Council:

SUMMARY

As a result of a position classification study of the full time,
non-management positions within the Department of Field Services
and the Division of Engineering Services, this report recommends
approval of revisions to the current position class titles within
'Department of Field Services and the reclassification of two
positions within the Division of Engineering Services, the latter
to include salary range adjustments.

BACKGROUND

A major responsibility of the City Manager's Office in the area
of personnel is to insure that each position in the City work-
force is properly classified. Each time a position is established
it is assigned to a class based upon the position's duties and
responsibilities. However, over a period of time, due to changes
in organization, workload, and methods of operation, the duties
and responsibility of a position may change. If these changes in
duties and responsibilities are significant, the class to which
the position was assigned originally may no longer be appropriate.

Before progressing further, it is necessary to define certain terms
so that the contents of this report can be better understood.

Position - a group of duties and responsibilities performed by
an employee.

Class - a group of positions whose duties and responsibilities
are so similar so as to: (1) be given the same job title, (2)
require the same education or experience, (3) be filled by the
same tests of ability or selection methods, and (4) warrant the
same salary range.

SR 77:55
