(Vicia villosa). One shrub, a small coyote brush (Baccaris pilularis), was observed near the
eastern boundary of the site
Ruderal habitats provide marginal habitat to a few species of terrestrial vertebrates. Most species
occumng on the project site are likely only utilizing the site as low-quality foraging habitat.
Many more species would be expected to pass through or over the site en route to more suitable
habitat. A small group of species may utilize the site throughout all or part of the yeaz as
breeding and foraging habitat.
The dirt clods and crevices created by the discing of the site in this habitat provides marginal
cover for several reptile species, including the western fence lizazd (Sceloporus occidentalis),
which was observed onsite, California alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus), and gopher
snake (Pituophis catenifer), which may pass through this habitat en route to more suitable habitat
and may forage in this habitat somewhat opportunistically for invertebrates and small mammals
and birds. A few small mammal burrows observed within the bank located along the western
edge of the property may also provide mazginal cover habitat for reptiles and amphibians.
Local and migratory bird species also forage in a limited way within this habitat. Raptors
observed flying over the site include the turkey vulture (Cathartes aura), northern harrier (Circus
cyaneus), red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), and white-tail kite (Elanus caeruleus). Other
birds observed in and near the site include the great blue heron (Ardea herodias), Canada goose
(Branta canadensis) prints and scat, mourning dove (Zenaida macroura), rock pigeon (Columba
Livia), Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna), black phoebe (Sayornis nigricans), American crow
(Corvus brachyrhynchos), cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota), barn swallow (Hirundo
rustica), western scrub jay (Aphelocoma californica), northern mockingbird (Mimus
polyglottos), European stazling (Sturnus vulgarts), golden-crowned sparrow (Passerculus
sandwichensis), western meadowlazk (Sturnella neglecta), and house finch (Carpodacus
mexicanus).
Common mammals also occur within this habitat. California ground squirrels (Spermophilus
beecheyi) and their burrows were observed along the edges of the site in low density.
