Mayor Tarver said if Council is going to deny the application or suggest modifications to
the design, it would be important to state the concerns. Then, when the application comes back to
Council, hopefully the concerns will be addressed.

Mr. Chestnut said he would accept continuing the item in order to work with staff and Mr.
Rodondi. He also has had conversations with Mr. Knapp and Mr. Dear.; it surprised him to find
they were upset with the design. Mr. Rodondi saw the design before it went to the Planning
Commission.

Ms. Dennis supported continuting the matter. She wanted to look at all the opportunities
before denying the application.

Mr. Chestnut felt a reorientationwould not work because that would mean tearing down the
house. He thought the City wanted to preserve the house. He wanted to know now if that is what
the Council wants, because he does not have the funds to keep on pursuing this, only to be denied
again.

Ms. Michelotti said that is not what her motion means.

Mayor Tarver suggested he get a copy of the minutes to see read about the concerns.

Ms. Ayala was also confused as to Council's concems. She thought the major problem is
-- the impact on the Rodondis.

Mayor Tarver had concems with how the building relates to the Knapp and Dear property
and the mass of the building.

Mr. Pico felt it was not appropriate to discuss the concerns at this time. He was willing to
discuss his concems with the Chestnuts at a different time. He said his position would be to vote
no because the Chestnuts are not willing to reorient the building. He would not be offended if the
Chestnuts wanted to tear the house down, because he saw no similarity to the original house in the
proposed design. He would support moving the existing house to the back of the lot and building a
new structure in front. He said there just has to be a consensus among the neighbors.

Mayor Tarver felt Council wanted everyone to agree so the Council is not in the middle.

Ms. Ayala said Mr. Chestnut has designed the house so the mass is to the back of the lot, in
order to keep Stanley Boulevard in character. Therefore, if the house is reoriented, the mass will be
on Stanley Boulevard.

Ms. Michelotti said the house is 30 feet, 9 inches high and will be seen from Stanley
Boulevard no matter what. She had a problem with the length of the house.

Pleasanton City Council 19 02/16/99
Minutes
