APPENDIX A <br />FIELD INVESTIGATION <br />Exploratory Test Pits: The fi e ld investigation con s isted o f a surface reconnaissance and a <br />subs urface explo ra tion program u sing a rubber-tired backhoe equipment to excavate <br />19 exploratory test pits on October 22 a nd 23, 1997, t o a maximum d e pth of 18 feet. The <br />approximate locations o f the test pits are sh own o n the Site Plan, Figure 2. The soils <br />encountered were continu o u sly logged in the field by o ur representative and described in <br />accordance w ith the Unifi ed Soil Classification System (ASTM D-2488). A summary of the <br />subsurface conditio n s encounte red in o ur test pits is summarized in Table A-1. A key t o <br />the classification of the soil and roc k , are included as part of this appendix. <br />The locati o ns o f the test pits were approximately dete rmined by pac ing from reference, <br />and -sh o uld be con sidere d a ccura te o nly to the deg ree implied by the method u sed. <br />Representative bulk soil s amples were obtained fr o m the test pits a t selected depths.
