Page 2 of 3 <br />• Several offer a Mock City Council or debate activity <br />• One provides a scavenger hunt. <br />Additionally, past student feedback (Attachment 1) includes these top three recommendations <br />for improvements to the program: <br />• Participate in a hands-on project with staff <br />• Participate in a job fair to meet professionals and learn about their jobs and current <br />openings <br />• Participate in an Amazing Race scavenger hunt activity to learn more about careers in <br />government. <br />After researching other events and reviewing all initial feedback, staff have two event options <br />for discussion: <br /> <br />Option A: <br />• Event Duration: 9 am - 12 pm <br />• Mock City Council Activity: <br />• Students receive details on three to five mock funding projects related to City or <br />teen issues prior to the event <br />• Students choose to support a project or serve on the Mock City Council <br />• Students who select a project will work with a staff advisor to understand the <br />project, create a presentation, and address the Mock City Council <br />• Staff advisors share insights about their jobs, career paths, and job opportunities <br />• Students present projects to the Mock City Council <br />• The Mock City Council asks questions, comments, and decides which project to <br />support, illustrating local governance and the democratic process. <br />• Pros: <br />• Eliminates the need for lunch <br />• Reduces conflicts for students with other commitments throughout the day <br />• Aligns with offerings in other cities <br />• Reduces costs and staff time for PUSD and the City <br />• Incorporates some desired elements from students, PUSD, and the City. <br />• Cons: <br />• Challenges for students requiring transportation back to school for lunch. <br />Option B: <br />• Event Duration: 9 am - 3:30 pm <br />• Mock City Council Activity + Amazing Race Scavenger Hunt: <br />• Provides the same Mock City Council activity listed in Option A <br />• Includes lunch for students <br />• Includes a two-hour Amazing Race scavenger hunt to learn more about careers <br />in the City and at PUSD. <br />• Pros: <br />• Resolves transportation issues since students won't need to return to school after <br />the event <br />Page 7 of 14
