MINUTES
OF THE
SPECIAL MEETING
OF THE
PLEASANTON CITY COUNCIL

October 30, 2001

p.mo

CALL TO ORDER

The special meeting of the City Council was called to order by Mayor Tom Pico at 7:52

Mayor Pico led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance.

2. ROLLCALL

City Clerk Peggy Ezidro called the roll, which is recorded as follows: Councilmembers
present were Kay Ayala, Matt Campbell, Becky Dennis, Sharrell Michelotti, and Mayor Tom
Pico. Staff members present were: Deborah McKeehan, City Manager; Michael Roush, City
Attorney; and Steven Bocian, Deputy City Manager.

3. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Kelly Sandler, 7815 Foothill Knolls Drive, indicated she was proud to be a teacher and to
live in Pleasanton. However, speaking for the all teachers, she was sad to read a comment in the
newspaper from a Councilmember that the 62% of Pleasanton teachers who do not live in the
city were not considered members of the community. She believed these teachers were a vital
part of the community and they have served in many capacities and have worked on the strategic
plans for the school district. No one was ever asked to show a deed to their homes. She felt
some civil servants seemed to be unaware of first amendment rights. Teachers can wear buttons
expressing their beliefs and to pick whatever candidates they choose. She reiterated her belief
that non-resident teachers are still a part of this community and she felt many were upset by the
comments made.

Ms. Ayala responded that this is an election year and strange things happen. She has
lived here since 1983 and has always worked to support the schools and admires the teachers and
administrators. She said the press does not always print exactly what was said. She said the
statements were totally out of context and she had contacted Kira of the Valley Times, who was
supposed to print a follow-up article. That has not been done. She assured the community and
teachers that she has the most respect for them. She will be glad when the divisiveness of this
election is over.

Pleasanton City Council 1 10/02/01
Minutes
