23
PLEt1SANTONe CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
July 17, 2007
Public Works Department
TITLE: APPROVAL OF THE SYCAMORE ROAD AND ALISAL STREET TRAFFIC
CALMING PROGRAM
SUMMARY
City of Pleasanton and Alameda County staffs have been working with the residents of
the Happy Valley neighborhood to develop solutions to address the concerns regarding
vehicle speeds in their neighborhood. The City of Pleasanton has agreed to fund the
solutions identified in the Happy Valley Traffic Calming Plan. The plan includes seven
raised asphalt speed lumps and two electronic radar speed signs. The Happy Valley
Steering Committee has collected the required signatures indicating that a strong
majority (67 %) of the residents support the plan.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve the Happy Valley Traffic Calming Plan which includes the installation of the
traffic calming devices on Sycamore Road and Alisal Street.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
The installation cost of the devices included in the Happy Valley Traffic Calming Plan
will be funded by the City of Pleasanton's Traffic Calming Program. The maintenance
cost will be paid through the Street Division's Road Maintenance Program and the City
of Pleasanton's Traffic Signal Maintenance Program.
The physical devices installed on Sycamore Road and Alisal Street will require minimal
maintenance. The Speed Lumps will need advanced warning and speed lump
pavement markings refreshed on an annual basis to ensure optimal visibility. The radar
speed signs will require routine maintenance which is covered in the Traffic Signal
Maintenance Contract. The street lights will be included in the County's street light
maintenance program. The estimated installation cost for the project is $80,000. Upon
approval, staff will coordinate the installation, order the materials for the radar speed
signs, and begin the PG &E process for adding the street lights to Alisal.
