THE CITY OF 4 <br />j~L~E~S~4NTONo CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br />July 17, 2007 <br />City Manager <br />TITLE: PROPOSED REVISIONS TO THE ORDINANCE SETTING THE <br />SALARIES FOR MAYOR AND COUNCIL <br />SUMMARY <br />State law permits a City Council to increase its salary by an amount no more than 5% <br />for each calendar year from the operative date of the last adjustment in salary. The <br />operative date of the last adjustment in Council's salary was December 1990 when the <br />salary was raised to $500/month. The attached ordinance raises the salary to <br />$950/month. Because the Mayor's salary is tied to Council salaries, the Mayor's salary <br />would increase to $1050/month. The new salaries would not be operative until the new <br />Council's term begins in December 2008. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Introduce the attached ordinance to increase each Councilmember's monthly salary to <br />$950, to be operative in December 2008. (Because section 2.06.040 of the Municipal <br />Code sets the Mayor's salary as $100/month more than Council salaries, that ordinance <br />does not need to be amended.) <br />FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br />Funds for this increase in FY 2008-09 have been budgeted. <br />
