Proclaims <br />June 2007 <br />Scleroderma Awareness Month <br />WHEREAS, Scleroderma is a chronic, degenerative disorder which leads to the over production of <br />collagen in the body's connective tissue. Becoming most serious when it affects <br />internal organs, causing severe damage and serious complications to the body's <br />digestive, respiratory, circulatory and immune systems; and <br />WHEREAS, scleroderma is estimated to affect neazly 500,000 Americans, with approximately <br />80% of its victims women who aze usually in the prime of their lives; and <br />WHEREAS, the Scleroderma Foundation and the Scleroderma Research Foundation fund and <br />direct national reseazch centers focused exclusively on finding a cure, the closest of <br />which is at the University of California at Sam Francisco; and <br />WHEREAS, locally, the Pleasanton Lions Club continues to raise money to help fund Scleroderma <br />research efforts in the name of Sandy Hazelhofer who lost her battle with this disease <br />and whose personal efforts contributed immeasurably to raising funds to find a cure. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Pleasanton City Council hereby proclaims <br />June 2007 as "Scleroderma Awareness Month" in the City of Pleasanton and encourages all <br />residents to become educated about Scleroderma and support the efforts of the foundations and <br />those sponsors who contribute funds to support reseazch into its cure. <br />Jennifer Hosterman, Mayor <br />Cindy McGovern, Vice Mayor <br />Matt Sullivan, Councilmember <br />Cheryl Cook-Kallio, Councilmember <br />Jerry Thorne, Councilmember <br />
