AS
Community of Character Week
WHEREAS, we are the stewards of our communities, nation, and in critical times-our world, and the well-being of
our society requires an involved, caring citizenry with good character; and
WHEREAS, more than ever, children and adults need constructive guidance from their communities, including
schools, youth organizations, religious institutions, civic groups, and businesses; and
WHEREAS, the character of a nation is only as strong as the character of its individual citizens, and the public good is
advanced when everyone is taught that good character counts in personal relationships, in school, and in
the workplace; and
WHEREAS, scholars and educators agree that people do not automatically develop good character and, therefore,
conscientious efforts must be made by institutions and individuals to help people develop the traits that
comprise good character, and
WHEREAS, character development is, first and foremost, an obligation of families, supported by schools, businesses,
faith communities, and youth, civic, and human service organizations, which play an important role in
supporting family efforts by fostering good character; and
WHEREAS, the City of Pleasanton incorporates character development traits into its conduct of business;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby proclaims Junc 3-9, 2007 as Community of
Character Week in the City of Pleasanton; encourages all community members to discuss how the American heritage
and laws reflect a common core of personal and social morality that holds the citizens of this democracy responsible for
acting morally and ethically, being involved in community, resolving differences peacefully, and respecting the rights,
dignity, and property of others; and encourages all citizens, corporate and individual, to model traits of good character
in an ongoing commitment to promote character development and ethical behavior among the citizens of our
community.
