Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails
Committee
Agenda Report
June 26, 2023

Item 6

SUBJECT: CALLIPPE PRESERVE AND AUGUSTIN BERNAL MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL
UPDATES

SUMMARY
On May 7, 2019, the City Council adopted the Pleasanton Trails Master Plan. Two of the
projects identified in the master plan – the Callippe Preserve and the Augustin Bernal Mountain
Bike trails – were identified as opportunities for mountain biking.

The Callippe Preserve Trail recently received new wayfinding signage to identify the location of
the trail from the trailhead parking lot and remove restrictions on mountain biking. Further
improvements to the trail are planned this coming fiscal year to improve the function of the trail.

The Augustin Bernal Mountain Bike Trail construction is nearly complete. The 0.7-mile trail is a
technical downhill-only mountain bike trail. The trail was constructed by a contractor that
specializes in mountain bike trail construction and will be opening in late June or early July.

RECOMMENDATION
Receive information regarding the updated mountain bike trail presentation and provide input.

BACKGROUND
In 2017 the city began the Trail Master Plan update. As part of that process, the City conducted
significant city-wide public outreach and the public identified projects they would like to see
completed. In regards to mountain biking, the top responses were signage improvements at the
Callippe Preserve Trail and making the trail accessible to mountain bikers as well as installing a
mountain bike-only trail at Augustin Bernal. The Trails Master Plan was adopted in May 2019.

Staff created wayfinding signage and a new map for the trailhead at the Callippe Preserve Trail
that included mountain bike usage on the trail. The signage was installed in May 2023 Further
improvements for the trail are planned in the upcoming fiscal year to address maintenance
challenges and improve usability for trail users.

In November 2020, staff began designing the 0.7-mile Augustin Bernal Mountain Bike Trail. The
trail design and environmental process were both completed in Fall 2022, the project was
advertised for bid in November 2022, and the City approved the construction contract and
adopted the environmental documents in February 2023. Construction on the downhill-only
mountain bike trail began in May and is expected to be complete in late June/early July.

Submitted by:
