THE CITY OF
"M
5M:rir1 ECONOMIC VITALITY COMMITTEE REPORT
PLEASANTON©
September 19, 2019
Economic Development
TITLE: PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION REGARDING WORK -BASED
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND POTENTIAL PARTNERSHIPS
BACKGROUND
In 2013, the City Council adopted the current Economic Development Strategic Plan
which the Economic Vitality Committee uses as the foundation for its work. The plan
comprises 3 focus areas:
Priority Area A: Business Development and Communication
Priority Area B: Built Environment and Workforce
Priority Area C: Economic Health and Resilience
The strategic plan does not include a specific action item related to supporting
opportunities for students to connect with local companies toward identifying career
pathways and/or types of jobs; however, on numerous occasions the EVC has noted
the value such connections could create. In fact, a few members of the EVC have
worked to bring together local firms and students through efforts such as "What Killed
Anna Garcia?" at Foothill High School.
Additionally, promotional materials such as the City's Economic Assets Report note the
achievement of our local K-12 students (e.g., graduation rate, etc.) as demonstration of
the quality of the local next -generation workforce, which underscores the value of
creating stronger connections between local businesses and career pathways.
DISCUSSION
Tri -Valley Regional Occupation Program (ROP) Superintendent Julie Duncan and Las
Positas College Dean Amir Law will provide an overview of work -based learning
opportunities for local high school and community college students, and the potential for
partnership with Tri -Valley companies. It is anticipated that the EVC representatives
from the Pleasanton Unified School District will take a lead role in this discussion.
ACTION: RECEIVE PRESENTATION AND OFFER FEEDBACK
