Public Comment Steve Dowding read into the record the names of the 5 soldiers most recently killed in Iraq and invited the public to join Pleasantonians for Peace at its next vigil on April 8. He challenged Council members to find a venue that allows them to remember and respect those who have given their lives for this country and that maintains awareness that the war continues with the lives of over 100,000 American men and women currently at stake. Mayor Hosterman said she is grateful to have had the opportunity to be able to do just that. Fred Norman cited the upcoming sixth anniversary of the war in Iraq, wished Pleasanton would take a stance on the issue, and he urged the Council and community to show their support at this Thursday night's vigil starting at 7 p.m. at the Crosses of Lafayette. Joan Johnson expressed her support for Pleasantonians for Peace, said that nearly 300 million citizens sit back complacently while 100,000 Americans risk their lives in defense of this country, and urged a push to keep the focus on this war. Art Tenbrink said he has worked hard to reinforce in his home what is taught in schools, especially the sense of being members of a community that values honesty, integrity, self discipline, respect, personal and civic responsibility, and compassion. He shared his personal conviction that civic service symbolizes the greatest power one individual can wield in today's world. The following day he would leave for Hiroshima to deliver hundreds of origami plants and poems to the peace memorial in honor of all those, dead and living, whose voices rise up for peace. He asked the Town Council to acknowledge this symbolic act of peace in whichever way they deem appropriate. Mayor Hosterman asked Mr. Tenbrink to extend her greetings to Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of Hiroshima, should they meet. Councilmember Sullivan thanked tonight's speakers for their continued efforts and assured them that despite appearances, their actions are appreciated and do make a difference.
