BACKGROUND
Each year, the City of Pleasanton-Pleasanton Unified School District Liaison Committee
establishes focus areas to guide its efforts for the year. The focus areas are then
presented to the full City Council and Board of Trustees for review and approval.
At its January 13, 2009 meeting, the Liaison Committee developed its proposed focus
areas for 2009. which are listed and described below.
Youth Services
This focus area is a catch-all category for the myriad of City, District and community
youth services, programs and activities of interest to the Committee. Keeping updated
on the work of the Youth Master Plan Implementation Committee and the City's Youth
Commission is also included under this heading.
School & Community Safety
The School Resource Officer program stands as a very successful example of how the
City and District jointly benefit by a shared commitment to improving safety on our
school campuses. The Committee is constantly looking for ways to expand on the
concept behind this program.
Transportation
The Committee continues to review issues being considered by the City's Traffic
Committee as they affect Pleasanton schools and also addresses traffic circulation and
transportation issues at all Pleasanton schools.
Character Education
The Committee has watched the Community of Character concept evolve, blossom and
spread not only throughout Pleasanton, but in surrounding communities as well. The
Committee continues to stress and incorporate the Community of Character guiding
principles in the programs, events and activities it reviews.
Operations Programs and Budgets
The Committee is committed to identifying, encouraging and fostering opportunities for
the City and District to continue working together toward common goals, thereby
maximizing efforts and reducing spending.
The Council is asked to approve the 2009 Liaison Committee focus areas.
Respectf ly sub fitted,
Nelson Fialho
City Manager
~~~ ~/
hn M.
