12
THE CITY OF
- ~ -•• ~ °'° ° =~=~ ~. "" CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
j'L~~S~4NTONG
March 3, 2009
City Manager
TITLE: RECEIVE INFORMATIONAL REPORT ON THE GREEN HOUSE GAS
EMISSIONS ANALYSIS ISSUED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL
FOR LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES (ICLEI)
SUMMARY
This item is a City Council priority. On May 1, 2007, the Council approved joining the
Alameda County Climate Protection Project, which was paired with a membership to the
International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and completion of a
green house gas emissions audit. Completion of the audit provides the basis for
several initiatives, including completion of a citywide action plan to reduce greenhouse
gases. Consistent with established Council policy, the new Committee on Energy and
the Environment will work to develop the action plan for City Council review and
consideration later this calendar year. Completion of the action plan will also provide an
opportunity to fulfill several sustainability initiatives contained within the City's new
General Plan and help the City comply with the State of California's landmark climate
reduction initiative, Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32).
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council accept this report and forward the matter to the
new Committee on Energy and the Environment. The Committee will utilize the
information as a basis for developing a climate action plan for future City Council
consideration.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
This report is for information only and its contents do not have a fiscal impact.
