RESOLUTION NO. 09-258 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON, IN <br />SUPPORT OF "GOT ASSETS? YOUTH AND ADULTS UNITED FOR A HEALTHY <br />COMMUNITY INITIATIVE" <br />WHEREAS, in collaboration with the Pleasanton Unified School District, the City of <br />Pleasanton and community members formed a "40 Developmental Assets" Task Force; and <br />WHEREAS, the Task Forces mission is to integrate Search Institute's 40 Developmental <br />Assets into the schools and community through meeting the goals of the Districts' Strategic <br />Planning Committee and the City's Youth Master Plan; and <br />WHEREAS, the 40 Developmental Assets are common sense, positive experiences and <br />qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible <br />adults; and <br />WHEREAS, the 40 Developmental Assets are arranged into eight categories; Support, <br />Empowerment, Boundaries and Expectations, Constructive Use of Time, Commitment to <br />Learning, Positive Values, Social Competencies and Positive Identity; and <br />WHEREAS, research shows that the more Assets young people have, the less likely <br />they are to engage in risky behaviors; and <br />WHEREAS, findings have shown that Assets promote academic success, increase civic <br />engagement, and give young people the strength they need to make positive choices in life; and <br />WHEREAS, throughout the world-in big cities and small towns-most young people now <br />experience fewer than half of the 40 Developmental Assets; and <br />WHEREAS, Pleasanton schools, City programs and the YMCA are actively participating <br />in the Assets Initiative, by providing training for youth, parents and staff, offering Summer Youth <br />Summits, Club 40, Leadership Academy and Youth in Government Day; and <br />WHEREAS, through service learning projects, young people put Assets into action; and <br />WHEREAS, the 40 Developmental Assets Task Force has implemented the "Got <br />Assets?" Youth and Adults United for a Healthy Community initiative to ensure that Pleasanton's <br />adults and youth work together to create public awareness of the positive contributions that <br />young people make to our city's progress. <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />PLEASANTON DOES RESOLVE, DECLARE, DETERMINE AND ORDER THE FOLLOWING: <br />SECTION 1. The City of Pleasanton in the State of California does hereby confirm its <br />support of the 40 Developmental Assets Task Force. <br />
