_ Item 6a
Staff Report
PLANNING COMMISSION
August 13, 198° EXHIBIT A
SUBJECT: UP-80-17
APPLICANT: Jeanne Baker
PURPOSE: Application for a conditional use permit
to allow the keeping of no more than 6
adult rabbits at property located at
6387 Alvord Way. Zoning for r.he property
is R-1-6500 District.
ATTACHMENT: Location Map
Jeanne Baker, resident of the house located at 6387 Alvord Way,
has 7 dwarf rabbits which she keeps in cages in her rear yard.
Mrs. Baker is applying for a conditional use permit to allow the
retention of a maximum of 6 of these rabbits.
The rabbits are kept in individual wire cages at the rear corner
of the Baker lot. Mrs. Baker raises the rabbits to show at the
County Fair and other exhibits. She has about 3 females for each
male and breeds the animals regularly to get the right color for
showing. A litter usually consists of 2 to 4 bunnies. These
bunnies are weaned at tcao months and then either sold or given away.
Dwarf rabbits are evidently very popular for children since they
only weigh 3 to 4 pounds at maturity.
This matter came to the City's attention due to a complaint by a
neighbor. The complainant indicated that the rabbits were generating
flies. During inspection of the premises, the staff did not notice
an unusual number of flies. The areas around the cages seemed to be
fairly clean. Mrs. Baker indicated that she has a small rototiller
and plows the rabbit droppings into the ground for fertilizer.
According to the County Health Department this is a satisfactory
method of disposal of the droppings.
Staff Recommendation: In the staff's opinion, the keeping of no
more than 6 adult dwarf rabbits should be acceptable on the Baker
premises if all requirements of the County Health Department for
maintaining these animals are adhered to. The cages in which they
are kept are modern and located in a remote corner of the Baker
yard about as far from their neighbors residences as possible.
Approval subject to the following conditions is recommended because
we feel that all required findings can be made for the granting of
this use permit:
