School Safety Valets of the Year Presentation <br />Lisa Adamos, Coordinator for Rides to School Program, said they would like to honor 5th grade <br />students who have volunteered as safety valets for the school year. She recognized Officers <br />Leong, Clornell, Jones, Ackerman and Blanchard who are involved in the program. <br />Sergeant Collins said the program is a collaboration of the City and School District, is part of the <br />Rides to School Program, said two adults and approximately 260 students are involved in the <br />program in 7 of the 9 elementary schools, and they are taught congestion and safety <br />techniques. <br />Vice Mayor Thorne honored the 7 students, representatives of the schools, and two adult <br />volunteers who make the Rides to School Program so successful. <br />15. Public Comment <br />Mike Conklin spoke on the Sentinels of Freedom program and their concentrated efforts in <br />California and Texas, said they ask cities to embrace the program and provide a letter of intent, <br />they secure jobs for those most severely wounded soldiers and discussed Victor's story of his <br />return from Iraq and employment with the San Ramon Fire Department. He said their five pillars <br />are education, employment, transportation, housing, and mentoring of individuals, they are non- <br />political, and they would love to include Pleasanton in their involvement. <br />Mayor Hosterman thanked Mr. Conklin and said the City Council can consider a resolution <br />under Matters Initiated by the Council. <br />Fred Norman said the Sentinels of Freedom is one of the best groups he has found in assisting <br />returning soldiers and recommended the City's support of the program. He said last month 19 <br />soldiers were killed in Iraq. <br />Kathy Dowding spoke of the coverage of the suicide rate in the military lately which mark a 20 <br />year high, the unpreparedness of the military in addressing PTSD, shared the names of 6 more <br />soldiers who were killed, and announced the P/easantonians for Peace gathering on June 11. <br />Tim Belcher thanked Vice Mayor Thorne for his recognition and hoped the information could be <br />placed on the City's website. He said he has seen many Callippe butterflies along the trails at <br />the Callippe Golf Course, believes more education would be gained by learning more about the <br />butterflies and their host plants, said two holes at the golf course where Callippe are have dead <br />landscaping which should be reviewed, spoke of Pleasanton's protection of the environment, felt <br />the Callippe butterfly is a barometer of the health and balance of the surrounding environment <br />and said the group trying to save Pleasanton Hills are doing this with their Initiative.
