These potential uses were considered to be particularly suitable for the
Staples Ranch site, accommodating both neighborhood and community/
regional needs. The trails, informal open space, dog exercise area and
tennis courts could directly serve both the surrounding neighborhood
and the adjacent continuing care facility. The site's adjacency to the
Arroyo Mocho, quarry lakes and regional trail system also presented a
unique opportunity for expanding park usage beyond the actual park
boundaries. The Commission recommended that a lighted baseball
field be considered for the five (5) acre neighborhood park parcel
being purchased to accommodate storm water detention and provide
additional open space, if feasible.
The City Council reviewed the proposed conceptual plan for Staples
Ranch Community Park at its meeting on July 17, 2007. After receiving
public input that generally supported the various elements of the
park, including an ice facility, the Council approved the Commission's
recommendation. Council Members confirmed that there was flexibility
in terms of actual placement of park amenities, which would be better
defined during the park master plan process.
During a joint City Council/Planning Commission Workshop on
November 8, 2007, regarding the Staples Ranch Development,
representatives of the local advocacy groups Pleasanton First
and Friends of Pleasanton read a joint statement concerning the
development. Though previously in disagreement about future plans
for the site, both groups expressed satisfaction regarding the direction
the various developments were proceeding, and the valued assets
each represented for Pleasanton. Concerning the community park,
the groups requested that a comprehensive master plan process be
conducted to further refine the various park elements and where they
would be located on the 17 acre property. This would represent an
open, transparent process, including outreach to the community and
public workshops. In a special meeting at the conclusion of the joint
workshop, the City Council directed staff to immediately initiate a
master planning process for the 17 acre Staples Ranch Community Park,
