12 <br />THE CITY OF <br />L~~S~4NTONo CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br />P <br />June 3, 2008 <br />Public Works Department <br />TITLE: ADOPT A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE INSTALLATION AND <br />ACTIVATION OF WESTBOUND I-580 RAMP METERS IN PLEASANTON <br />SUMMARY <br />Recent ramp metering efforts along eastbound I-580 have significantly improved travel <br />times during the afternoon commute. Westbound I-580 ramp metering in Pleasanton is <br />expected to provide similar benefits. In addition to the improved freeway operations, the <br />activation should attract additional commuters to the freeway system and away from <br />local Pleasanton streets. Caltrans is completing the installation of ramp metering <br />hardware and it should be in place and ready for activation by the end of the year. Staff <br />will work with Caltrans to determine the optimal metering rates to minimize the local <br />impact and maximize the operational benefits. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Adopt a resolution supporting the activation of westbound I-580 ramp meters in <br />Pleasanton to improve freeway traffic operations and reduce cut-through traffic on local <br />Pleasanton streets. <br />FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br />There is no financial impact as a result of this recommendation. <br />
