BACKGROUND
Along with adopting the required resolution associated with the November 4, 2008,
General Municipal Election, for the election of a Mayor for a term of two years and two
members of the City Council for a term of four years, staff recommends that the Council
adopt a resolution to consolidate the election with the County. Further, staff suggests
adopting a resolution related to candidate statements and the payment of $255.00 to
offset the cost associated with translating and printing the statements. Based on
inflation, this cost is a 6.15% increase from the 2006 election. Staff recommends that
the word count for the statements be set at 200 words per statement which is consistent
with previous elections. Also consistent with past elections and the Elections Code
candidates will pay a $25.00 filing fee.
The nomination period for candidates begins on Monday, July 14, 2008 and ends on
Friday, August 8, 2008. In the event that an eligible incumbent does not file papers by
5:00 p.m. on August 8, the nomination period will be extended for five days, until
Wednesday, August 13, for any qualified candidate except the incumbent.
Submitted by:
~.~-~l
Karen Diaz
City Clerk
Fiscal Review:
David P.
