9
THE CITY OF
~ ~ ~llw m~u n~
j~L~E~S~4NTONo
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
May 20, 2008
Fire Department
TITLE: RESOLUTION TO AUTHORIZE USED OIL RECYCLING BLOCK GRANT
APPLICATION
SUMMARY
The California Oil Recycling Enhancement Act mandates the California Integrated
Waste Management Board (CIWMB) to provide annual Block Grants to local
governments for establishing local collection programs that encourage recycling of used
oil. Because the Block Grants are not competitive, local governments need to submit a
completed application and meet the program's eligibility requirements to receive a grant.
Used Oil grant funds allow the City to assist citizens in properly disposing of used oil
and filters through activities such as establishment of collection facilities and public
outreach and education. This significantly reduces contamination of the environment.
The City of Pleasanton meets the eligibility requirements for the Fourteenth Cycle Used
Oil Recycling Block Grant application for the fiscal year 2008-2009. The completed
application, due June 2, 2008, must be accompanied by an authorizing resolution. As
of the date this staff report was prepared and submitted, the State had not yet released
the application package and exact grant amount. We have enclosed the 13th cycle
(2007-2008) application for reference only. We anticipate that the grant amount will be
similar to the amounts listed last year in the 13th cycle.
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to submit the Block Grant application to
the California Integrated Waste Management Board fora 2008-2009 Fourteenth Cycle
Used Oil Block Grant.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
No net fiscal impact to the City.
