12 <br />Proclaims <br />May 10-18, 2008 <br />National Tourism Week <br />WHEREAS, tourism and travel generate millions of jobs and billions of dollars in taxes; and is <br />a vital resource in improving America's image around the world; and <br />WHEREAS, in Pleasanton, the travel industry contributes substantially to the community's <br />cultural and social well being; and <br />WHEREAS, every citizen benefits from travel and tourism as the travel industry substantially <br />enhances our personal growth and education, while promoting intercultural <br />understanding and appreciation of Pleasanton's history, geography, and culture; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the travel industry is one of California's largest employers, and directly <br />supported 928,700 jobs in 2006, with earnings valued at $28.5 billion, and also <br />generated $2.1 billion in local taxes and $3.5 billion in state taxes; and <br />WHEREAS, the Tri-Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau generated more than $6 million <br />for the local economy in this fiscal year to date (as of March 31, 2008), and has <br />the expectation of surpassing its goal of $6.2 million by the end of the fiscal year; <br />and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby proclaims May 10-18, <br />2008 as National Tourism Week, in recognition of the value that travel and tourism bring to the <br />Pleasanton community. <br />Jennifer Hosterman, Mayor <br />Jerry Thorne, Vice Mayor <br />Cindy McGovern, Councilmember <br />Cheryl Cook-Kallio, Councilmember <br />Matt Sullivan, Councilmember <br />
