11 <br />Proclaims <br />May 26-31, 2008 <br />Community of Character Week <br />WHEREAS, the definition of Character is "the aggregate of features and traits that form the <br />individual nature of some person or thing;" and <br />WHEREAS, we are the stewards of our communities, nation, and--in critical times--our world, <br />and the well-being of our society requires an involved, caring citizenry with good <br />character; and <br />WHEREAS, more than ever, children and adults need constructive guidance from their <br />communities, including schools, youth organizations, religious institutions, civic <br />groups and businesses; and <br />WHEREAS, the character of a nation is only as strong as the character of its individual citizens, <br />and the public good is advanced when everyone is taught that good character counts <br />in personal relationships, in school, and in the workplace; and <br />WHEREAS, scholars and educators agree that people do not automatically develop good character <br />and, therefore, conscientious efforts must be made by institutions and individuals to <br />help people develop the traits that comprise good character; and <br />WHEREAS, character development is, first and foremost, an obligation of families, supported by <br />schools, businesses, faith communities, and youth, civic, and human service <br />organizations, which play an important role in supporting family efforts by fostering <br />good character; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby proclaims May 26-31, 2008 <br />as Community of Character Week in Pleasanton; encourages all community members to discuss how <br />the American heritage and laws reflect a common core of personal and social morality that holds the <br />citizens of this democracy responsible for acting morally and ethically, being involved in community, <br />resolving differences peacefully, and respecting the rights, dignity and property of others; and <br />encourages all citizens, corporate and individual, to model traits of good character in an ongoing <br />commitment to promote character development and ethical behavior among the citizens of our <br />community. <br />Jennifer Hosterman, Mayor <br />Jerry Thorne, Vice Mayor <br />Cindy McGovern, Councilmember <br />Cheryl Cook-Kallio, Councilmember <br />Matt Sullivan, Councilmember <br />
