RESOLUTION NO. 08-179 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON, <br />ESTABLISHING A GOAL OF 75% REDUCTION OF WASTE GOING TO LANDFILLS <br />BY (2010) IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE COUNTYWIDE 75% WASTE REDUCTION <br />GOAL <br />WHEREAS, the California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 mandated that <br />every city and county in the state reduce the quantity of solid waste disposed within their <br />jurisdiction and disposed in landfills by fifty percent by 2000; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Pleasanton has met the 50% waste reduction goal; and <br />WHEREAS, the Alameda County Waste Reduction and Recycling Initiative Charter <br />Amendment (Measure D) established a countywide goal of 75% reduction of waste going to <br />landfills; and <br />WHEREAS, the Alameda county Integrated Waste Management Plan also established a <br />countywide goal of 75% reduction of waste going to landfills by 2010; and <br />WHEREAS, efforts to reduce waste, recycle and compost more in the residential, <br />commercial, industrial and institutional sectors, and efforts to incorporate other waste reducing <br />activities such as green building and bay-friendly landscape design can have a significant <br />positive effect on energy, water and resource efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, waste and <br />pollution generation, wildlife habitat and the health and productivity of employees; and <br />WHEREAS, City of Pleasanton has adopted a number of policies and programs that <br />support this goal including a green building ordinance, a residential food waste collection <br />program, a residential recycling program and a food scrap collection program. <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />PLEASANTON DOES RESOLVE, DECLARE, DETERMINE AND ORDER THE FOLLOWING: <br />SECTION 1. That the City Council adopts the goal of 75% reduction of waste going to <br />landfills by 2010 in accordance with the countywide 75% waste reduction goal using the existing <br />state of California Diversion rate methodology for measurement; <br />SECTION 2. That City of Pleasanton staff will work with StopWaste.Org to accomplish <br />this goal and present strategies and programs to City Council for consideration as needed. <br />PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Pleasanton at <br />a regular meeting held on April 15, 2008. <br />I, Karen Diaz, City Clerk of the City of Pleasanton, California, certify that the foregoing <br />resolution was adopted by the City Council at a regular meeting held on the 15th day of April, <br />2008, by the following vote: <br />Ayes: Councilmembers Cook-Kallio, McGovern, Sullivan, Mayor Hosterman <br />Noes: None <br />Absent: Councilmember Thorne <br />Kar n Diaz, City CI <br />APPROVED AS TO FORM: <br />~u.IC~Q,l~2 ~ /~,~. <br />Michael H.
