14 <br />Proclaims <br />Apri12008 <br />as <br />Child Abuse Prevention Month <br />WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect know no social or economic boundaries; and, <br />WHEREAS, child abuse is a significant factor that yields harmful consequences for society: <br />including drug and alcohol-abuse, teen pregnancy, youth violence, education failures, <br />learning disabilities, employability and the next generation of abusive and neglectful <br />parents; and, <br />WHEREAS, preventing child abuse and neglect are the responsibilities of every individual, and <br />organization; and, <br />WHEREAS, community action and involvement are essential to breaking the cycle of abuse; and, <br />WHEREAS, effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships created <br />among social service agencies, schools, religious and civic organizations, law <br />enforcement agencies, and the business community; and, <br />WHEREAS, it is vital that all individuals and organizations, become more aware of the negative <br />effects of child abuse, and are involved in supporting parents and guardians, helping <br />to ensure all children are raised in safe, nurturing environments; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Pleasanton City Council hereby proclaims <br />April 2008 as Child Abuse Prevention Month and calls upon all residents to participate in efforts to <br />eliminate child abuse. <br />Jennifer Hosterman, Mayor <br />Jerry Thorne, Vice Mayor <br />Cindy McGovern, Councilmember <br />Cheryl Cook-Kallio, Councilmember <br />Matt Sullivan, Councilmember <br />
