here Bay-Friendly Landscape Guidelines are written for the professional
landscape industry to offer an integrated approach to environmentally friendly
landscaping.
The Guidelines are organized around seven principles for protecting the environment. By
viewing the landscape through the lens of these seven principles, we can see it in a
different light, such as how plant selection can create or decrease waste or how soil
preparation can prevent or increase runoff. There are ffty-fve practices listed under these
seven principles. The practices themselves each include many examples of applications.
The applications are meant to be a starting point but are not meant to be
comprehensive. It is likely that there are many additional applications for each.
to information in these Guidelines
provided for consideration by
idscape professionals in the
arse of designing, constructing
d maintaining new or exiriing
rdscapes. It is presented as a
blic service by the Alameda
>unty Waste Management and
~.cyding Board in an attempt to
aport environmental benefits and
jute costs. The practices in these
idelines are strictly for use on a
luntary basis. They are not a
~stitute for the exercise of sound
Igment in particular circum-
nces and are not intended as
ommendations for particular
proaucu or services.
On the other hand, some of the practices are repeated under different principles because
one practice can be integral to more than one principle. In other words, there are a number of critical practices that
can protect the environment in more than one way. Using mulch, for example, reduces waste, nurtures the soil,
conserves water, and creates wildlife habitat
The Bay-Friendly principles, practices, and applications included in these Guidelines were selected with guidance from
landscape architects and designers, contractors, and experts in the many fields represented in these Guidelines, as well
as representatives from local public agencies and the staff of StopWaste.Org.
Bay-Friendly Landscaping is a program of StopWaste.Org.
Development Team
Teresa Eade, Senior Program Manager Cynthia Havstad, Program Manager David Gilmore, Graphic Designer
stopWaste.Org, teade@stopWaste.Org stopWaste.Org, chavstad@stopWaste.Org david@outrightadlo.org
Special thanks go to the following landscape professionals and agency representatives for their input, review and commitment to the
completion of these guidelines:
Mlchael 8ae(sky
Baefsky & Associates
Katrine Benninger
Katrine Benninger Landscape Design
Mlchael Boland
Presidio Trust
Jake Cacciato
Jensen Corporation Landscape Contractors
Rebecca Coffman
Design Works
shauna Cozad & Karen Wilder
UC Cooperative Extension, Alameda County
Tanya Drllk
Blo-Integral Resource Center
Sharon Farrell & Tamara Shulman
Aquatic Outreach Institute
(now called The Watershed Project)
Christine Finch, Susan Handjlan & David Langridge
East Bay Municipal U61ity District
Geotf Hall
Sentient Landscape, loc.
Doug Johnson
California Invasive Plant Council
Manual Gonzales
Cagwin & Donvard
Greg Harrington
UC Berkeley
Jerry Koch
Gty of Berkeley
George Pacheco
Pacheco Brothers Gardening
Bob Perry, Professor Emeritus
Cal Poly, Pomona
Jim scanlin
Alameda Countywide Clean Water Program
Glen Schneider
Glen Schneider Landscape
Chris Shein
Wildheart Gardens
Nate Sllin
New Growth Landscape
Mr, Burt Tanoue
OfSce of Cheryl Barton
Mlchael Thllgen
Four Dimensions Landscape Co,
COVER PHOTOS: TOP LEFT AND CENTER RIGHT:
MICHAEL THILG EN, FOUR DIMENSIONS LANDSCAPE
CO.
