^ Site 300 vegetation map, if available from Livermore National Laboratories
^ Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area vegetation map, if available from
California Department of Parks and Recreation
^ USFWS wetland inventory data
^ Hardwood Rangeland Vegetation Dataset (1994) and the Development Footprint
Dataset (2003) from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
^ Important Farmland Dataset from the California Department of Conservation
(e.g., can be used to update boundaries of urban areas)
To provide additional verification of the mapping, two Jones & Stokes biologists will
"ground-truth" the data by conducting up to one week of field reconnaissance surveys.
Surveys will consist of driving accessible roads in the study area to validate the land
cover polygon attributions in the GIS database.
Deliverables: Draft and final land cover classification scheme; final land cover map;
GIS data to all participating agencies on CDs.
Task 2. Map Focal Species
To focus the Conservation Strategy, Jones & Stokes will work with USFWS, CDFG, and
local technical staff and stakeholders to identify "focal species". We will begin the effort
by developing a clear set of criteria to guide the selection process. Focal species may
include
^ Species listed by the USFWS or CDFG as threatened, endangered, or candidates
^ Non-listed species that have special-status by CDFG, CNPS, or other agencies
and that are consistently addressed in environmental compliance documents
^ Selected common species used as surrogates or indicators for wildlife corridor
use or other important ecological processes
Jones & Stokes will base the initial list of candidate focal species on the list of special-
status species in the study area prepared for Alameda County for their general plan
update process (ROSA) in 2003. All species will be screened against the criteria to
develop a preliminary draft and draft list of focal species.
Once the focal species have been selected, Jones & Stokes will work with USFWS,
CDFG, and local technical staff and stakeholders to determine general biological goals
for each focal species. For example, it maybe feasible for some species to increase their
populations or the extent of suitable habitat. For other species, it may only be feasible to
maintain current population or suitable habitat in the study area. These general biological
goals will help to guide the data collection process for each species.
Eastern Alameda County Conservation Strategy August 2007
Scope of Work q
