Hawk Attacks! ! Page 2 of 2
My second Cooper's Hawk attack, it went after my white homers today, scaring off an old hen. I
never saw her again, the hawk was hot on her tail when I last saw her. Also, when I was trying to
coax the remaining whites back in the loft, this big fat cat started scaring the whites by climbing
the fence behind my Ioft...I just told him to take off and he did.
This is the same Cooper's Hawk as my first attack I think, I see him every couple of days, it is so
fast, it flys below, in amongst the trees just above the fences and roofs. It seems to want to scare
up birds and then give chase, the hawk was in and out of my yard in seconds, but the birds still
go nuts. Today I found out my theory about song birds is totally wrong, there were at least SO
different species of birds in my back yard and neighbour's yard, about 100 birds, in the area, at
least. The hawk came right for the fat and chased off the first fat bird that panicked and tryed to
escape! I doubt the bird is still alive. Eventually got 4 of 5 white homers back. The reason they
were out was that I let a 4+ week old white squeaker out and it flew onto the roof, so I let the
others out to keep him company, I got the sgeaker back in. I am going to keep my birds inside for
another couple of weeks probably until the end of March. I am glad I am learning these lessons
with the whites...but sorry none the less to be loosing the little fellas. I cannot defend against
them in the city where I live, even though I have a hawk trap I doubt the hawk will stop on the
roof of my deck..
My Third and Fourth Cooper's Hawk Attacks
Apri1,2002
My third and fourth attacks....well it was really one visitation and one attack. Around April 10, a
Cooper's flew past my loft about 15 to 20 feet above me and the birds. As the hawk was flying by
I said to myself, "Shit, was that a hawk?" And I looked up and I saw the Young Birds (Racing
Homers) just watch as this guy quitely flew past, checking out my place.
The Cooper's came back around the 18th, (I will have to check my notes)...but this time he flew
at the birds, avoiding the trees and wires. Most the older young birds took off, flying super high
for about twenty minutes and buzzing the hawk trees... Fortunately I started yelling at the hawk
right away and I started banging with a hammer on this scrap wooden pallet I am pulling apart
(why, I don't know because it is junk and will probably just end up in the garbage or my wood
stove..) With the noise and yelling the hawk "ducked" out the back side of his trees withing about
thirty seconds, I think I was too much to take with the yelling and hammering and all. These last
2 attacks weren't good for the hawk, another month and my young birds will be up in the air the
minute they are out of the loft and back inside the loft the second they land. The hawk will prefer
to attack the birds at these vulnerable times, so if my birds are lucky he will see they are too
healthy and lean and fast and just leave us be...
I don't mind hawks they are to be respected, but I will continue to try to make it inconvienient
and unprofitable for the hawk to visit my loft.
http://www.pi~eonvlanet.com/hawk.html i ~ i~ i~nn~
