Natalie Amos
From: Maria Hoey
Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2007 11:55 AM
To: Donna Decker; Julie Harryman; Natalie Amos
Subject: FW: Hosterman Hawk
-----Original Message-----
From: Bruce Rodgers
Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2007 11:47 AM
To: Maria Hoey
Subject: Hosterman Hawk
I've never met Jennifer Hosterman and I don't have any opinions on her performance and qualifications as mayor,
but I am irritated at the amount of time and energy that the city employees are having to spend on an issue that
was generated by someone with a purely political grudge. Hosterman did not violate any existing code or statute
because none exist that apply to her situation. Yet she is being forced to apply for a permit just to placate a critic
with a personal complaint. His phrasings of "trained-to-kill" and "vivisection of...bunnies" are incorrect and
exaggerated for effect. Such raptors are trained to respond to human commands, they kill naturally, and eat their
prey to survive. It seems to me that Hosterman's efforts to help the injured bird heal and to eventually return it to
the wild are more of a public service than a threat to society.
As to the request to "put safety first"; safe from what? I live on Second Street in the middle of Pleasanton. This
past spring I was standing at our kitchen window and saw a large hawk sitting in a tree in my neighbor's yard,
about 40 feet away. It was eating a bird that it had just caught. I cannot see that Hosterman's actions are going
to result in anything happening that isn't already happening naturally.
Bruce Rodgers
12/5/2007
