THE CITY OF
pL£~S~4NTONo CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
1
January 15, 2008
Parks and Community Services
TITLE: APPROVE FUNDING REQUEST OF $20,000 TO EDEN I&R, INC. FOR
ALAMDEA COUNTY SOCIAL SERVICE 2-1-1 HOTLINE
SUMMARY
In July 2000, the Federal Communications Commission designated 2-1-1 as the
telephone number to obtain social service information throughout the United States. In
2003, the California Public Utilities Commission selected Eden I&R, Inc., to implement
and manage the 2-1-1 system for Alameda County.
A total of $1.3 million is estimated by Eden I&R, Inc., to offer the 2-1-1 service
throughout the County. Eden I&R, Inc. has received $500,000 from Alameda County,
and raised $300,000 from private and non-profit foundations to offset its costs. All cities
within Alameda County are being requested to contribute toward the $500,000 shortfall,
with Pleasanton's per capita share set at $20,000.
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council approve a one (1) year allocation of $20,000 to Eden I&R, Inc., to
implement the Alameda County 2-1-1 telephone system for social service referrals.
Staff will evaluate the level of service provided to Pleasanton residents in the event
future City funding is requested for the program.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
The City's $20,000 commitment would be allocated from the General Fund.
