The Ruby Hill Traffic and Safety Committee supports and encourages
the City of Pleasanton to allow the Pleasanton Police Department to issue
citations for any moving violations within our community, as they do
elsewhere in Pleasanton. This recommendation comes after careful
consideration of all possible solutions to calm the traffic within our gates,
including speed bumps, private patrols and traffic cameras. We met with
our local police department, city traffic engineers, private traffic consultants
and leaders of other similar gated communities.
For the past seven or more years our monthly newsletter, The
Grapevine, has pleaded with residents to drive within the speed limit and to
stop at stop signs. Many ignore these requests, and our streets have become
progressively more dangerous. We currently have no way to enforce our
traffic rules. We cannot ignore the simple behavioral principle that most
two-year-olds clearly understand: a rule is not a rule unless it's enforced.
Anyone who blows through a stop sign or races around the community at 40
or 50 MPH knows that.
Our traffic issue tonight has nothing to do with enforcing drunk
driving laws. We all know that drunk driving is a crime that police can
already enforce in private gated communities.
As the City considers our petition tonight and next month at the City
Council meeting, please remember that we have over 1,000 children living
here. They play in their front yards and driveways, walk along our streets
because most areas do not have sidewalks, and drive in their parent's cars.
Our committee asks that you choose safety over resident's concern of getting
a ticket. The only thing we are asking our residents to do is to drive within
the speed limits and stop at all stop signs just like everyone else in
Pleasanton. It's that simple. We ask our City leaders and staff to help make
Ruby Hill a safe community for our families.
Tom McMahon, Co-chair, Traffic and Safety Committee
May 30, 2007
ATTACHMENT
