Other facilities in the park include discreetly located picnic tables
along the edge of the ridgeland meadow aress and along the Short Cut
Trsil. Another water connection wlth s trough is included at the south
end of the fenced meadow area to provide water for hikers, horses, and
deer. The spring located on Valley View Trail should also be tested for
potability to determine whether it can be tapped ~or animal or even
human use. ~'

Grazing has occurred on the site since its earliest European ownership and
continues st present at the ridgeland meadows and Golden Eagle Farms.
Grazing has proven to be an essential element in fire prevention as it
keeps flsmmable underbrush to a minimum. Herds should be discouraged from
grazing on the meadows until mid-June, however, to protect the spring
wildflower display which is one o~ the most attractive features of the
park. The U,S, Soll Conservation Service should be consulted for ~urther
study regarding the potential for grazing on the parkland. Since the Only
really viable grazing land on the site is the ridgelend meadows, it is
possible that the site may only be capable o~ supporting ~rom 4 to 8 head
o~ cattle.

In order to ~acilitste a range management program in the park, standard
barbed-wire drift ~ences should be repaired and extended. The two large
memdovs in the west o~ the park will be completely enclosed to limit
equestrian use o~ the area. These ~ences would also be used to exclude
cattle ~rom the meadows during the spring wild~lover bloom. Either the
existing grazing o~ the site could continue or s "pet" herd o~ cattle or
goats could be maintained by the City o~ Pleasanton.

It is our recomaedstion that at least one park sam{{ person be employed on
either a part or full-time basis to assist in park supervision and security.
Inclusive in this sta~ member's responsibilities would be the securing o~
the park access gates, and the surveillance o~ the park trails during use
and at closing. An electronic gate similiar to the one st Golden Eagle
Farms could be implemented to replace the nee~ ~or a manually-operated
gate, however it would not be a substAtue for park supervision.

These proposed developments to Augustin Bernel Park will allow for
greater use o~ the park by Pleasanton residents. The increased use viA1
measurably impact the area and require ~urther continued maintenance.
Therefore it is likely that additional parks sta~ will be required to
both maintain and patrol the park. By limiting the use o~ campground
~acilities to scheduled groups it is less likely that areas will be used
irresponsibly, keeping maintenance time to a minimum.
