Through the generosity of Mr. Walter S. Johnson, St. the City of
Pleasanton, in 1971, received 232 acres of unspoiled woodlands on the
Pleasanton Ridge. Augustin Bernal Park, as it was named in the Johnson
bequest, awards to the residents of Plessanton an outstanding oppdrtunity
to enjoy a nearby outdoor setting rich in natural resources and scenic
beauty.

On 15 April 1988, the City Council approved retaining Kent Watson &
Associates, landscape architects, to prepare the Augustin Bernal Park
Master Plan. A public input meeting was held by the Park and Recreation
Commission on 5 May 1986. After preparation of a resource analysis, a
draft concept plan was submitted to and reviewed by the Parks and
Recreation Commission on 18 June 1986. After receiving public comment,
the Commission approved a l?-point park program (see appendix). This plan
is a reflection of that program.

The natural features o~ the site, primarily its pristine landforms and
outstanding collection of California native plants, dictate a design
approach which calls for preservation. The emphasis of the park plan,
therefore, shall be the enhancement and interpretation of the site's
natural resources.

In addition to its physical assets, the park hss constraints which will
limit its development. Issues such as a lack o~ site access, rugged
topogrsphy, and restriction of motort=ed vehicles are addressed in this
Master Plan.

Therefore, in developing a land use plan that will best utilize and
preserve the Augustin Bernal Park site the concepts are:

I) to preserve and enhance the significant natural features of the
site with.3ut impacting existing habitats;

2) to provide appropriate circulation systems that will accomodate and
separate pedestrian and equestrian uses, and allow safe access to
the site;

3) to provide park improvements and trail systems which will
facilitate park appreciation, enhancement and management;

4) to coordinate park development with the adjacent park uses to
guarantee ss~e use, security and compatibility; and

5) to enhance the educative potential of the property by installing an
interpretire program for the identification and understanding of
outstanding site features.

- 1 -
