Commissioner Narum expressed hesitation about the use of story poles because they tend to be misrepresented and misinterpreted by neighbors to the detriment of an otherwise good project. She felt that the story poles for the Alviso Adobe silo had played a part in causing the project to be rejected. Ms. Decker noted that story poles were an engineering challenge for a project of this size because they had to withstand the elements and could not be a distraction to freeway traffic, yet be visible as well. Commissioner Narum would like to see simulated visuals. Ms. Decker noted that visuals would probably be more helpful and that story poles did not have the benefit of being easily understood or representing pre-existing landscaping. Chairperson Fox believed it would be beneficial for the neighborhood to understand the height by the use of a story pole where the height of the dome would be at the top of the pole and with a mark on where the glass dome would start. No action was taken. 7. MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION MEMBERS Chairperson Fox noted that it was past 11:00 p.m. and inquired about starting the discussion of new items. a. Tabled motion: Consideration of whether to take the motion made by Commissioner Olson on July 11, 2007 from the table; if majority support to do so, then consider Commissioner Olson’s July 11, 2007 motion. No discussion was held or action taken. b. Discussion of the types of projects to be placed on the Consent Calendar. Chairperson Fox noted that this item could take considerable time. Commissioner Blank suggested that Item 7.b. be tabled for a future meeting. Commissioner O’Connor was unsure whether the discussion would take very long and noted that Commissioner Narum had wanted all the Commissioners to be present. Chairperson Fox did not believe there was any urgency to that item and supported continuing it. She suggested placing it at the beginning of the agenda. Ms. Seto noted that procedure items were often placed at the end of the agenda to allow public hearing items to be heard. She suggested continuing it to a meeting where the agenda was not as heavy.
