Cy Matin, a Pleasanton resident, discussed the poor condition of tennis courts in
Pleasanton and the need for free, lighted tennis courts. He believed the solutions that are being
offered to address this issue were a band aide approach. He suggested Council use the
$92,000 for lighting the Pleasanton Middle School courts for 10 free, lighted tennis courts
located together on the Bernal property.
Mayor Hosterman noted that Council has tried to meet the needs of the community.
Council has not determined that the need for additional tennis courts is a high priority. She
recalled that Council took action to consider looking at placing lighted tennis courts on the
Bernal property at some point in the future.
Mr. Fialho said staff is currently developing a specific plan that will be considered by
Council early winter 2005. Council will have the opportunity to weigh in on the concept of tennis
courts on the Bernal property among other things. The way the specific plan is being written, it
will provide Council maximum flexibility to program this kind of use for that site if it sees fit for
some point in the future.
Leonard Cooper, a Pleasanton resident, commended the work of the tennis operator,
Lifetime Tennis, in the short time it has been hired to manage tennis service at the Tennis and
Community Park. He stressed the need for additional lighted tennis courts in Pleasanton
particularly with the many programs currently being offered which will create a greater need for
additional courts.
Mayor Hosterman closed the public comments.
Mr. Brozosky inquired about access to the high school tennis courts and asked if the
schools were locked on the weekends that would make it impossible for tennis players to
access the courts.
Ian Anderson, Parks and Community Services Supervisor, said the gates at the local
high school are locked on the weekends. Staff will discuss this with School District staff and
work on a plan to have the schools open on Saturdays and Sundays. He informed Council that
the tennis courts at Foothill High School are accessible to the public on the weekends by
parking in front of the high school and walking around to where the tennis courts are located.
Mr. Wolfe did not anticipate a problem working with School District staff to resolve this
issue. He mentioned that the tennis courts at Amador Valley High School were originally
located in the parking lot area and accessible to the public. With the renovations at the high
school, the tennis courts are now located further back on the campus.
Mr. Sullivan mentioned that access to restrooms was available at the high schools if
other sports events were occurring.
Mr. Wolfe said this would need to be coordinated with the School District and if the City
wanted to make restrooms available to tennis players, this would be an issue because there is
no one present to manage the restrooms and the School District would be incurring a cost,
which would be passed on to the City. It may even mean that the School District may need to
have a janitor on site for the entire time, which could become cost prohibitive in terms of
providing this type of service.
Pleasanton City Council 15 09/06/05
Minutes
