Ms. Dennis asked if other cities had clubs.

Mr. Wenstrand said they did though not necessarily through United States Water Polo.

Ms. Ayala asked what equipment was needed.

Mr. Wenstrand said they needed balls, net goals, and protective caps; the athletes provide
their own swimsuits. He has supplied some balls and also uses balls from the Th-Valley
Masters. They are using the City's goals, but those are not in good condition. He wanted to add
a second pair of goals so they can operate more than one practice at a time. He explained that
the caps are good for several years, but the balls tend to age and need to be replaced after about
two years.

Mr. Campbell asked if the fund request was strictly for equipment or for operating
expenses, such as pool rental?

Mr. Wenstrand said it was just for equipment (two goals and one game clock). The caps
and balls are less expensive and can be acquired as fees are received from players.

Pat Sangiacomo, 2720 Sanderling Way, indicated he is donating his CPA services to the
club to help them obtain their 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. His son is very interested in water polo.
He indicated soccer started with a small group of kids. This organization is asking for a little
seed money. The children of this community are very interested in sports and this is another
outlet for them. A quasi-Board of Directors has been formed and they have started fund raising
activities. He encouraged Council to support this program. Pleasanton has always been on the
cutting edge and he felt this was a great opportunity. He praised Colin Wenstrand and believed
this organization was a great asset for the community.

Mark Avon, 1992 Martin Avenue, said he and others have been interested in starting a
water polo group for the last eleven years and it is finally happening. He also praised Mr.
Wenstrand and asked Council to provide seed money. He said with regard to the concern that
there is not an established Board of Directors, he felt Council could award the grant with the
condition that a Board be formed. He is volunteering his time for the program as unofficial team
doctor. There is a potential to have a great program in the City and he asked for support.

Steve Brozosky, 1700 Vineyard Avenue, indicated he is one of the volunteer parents at
Vintage Hills Elementary School and works with the robotics program. They are expanding the
program to include more students. He said it is amazing what the kids can do at the elementary
level after only a little instruction. He referred to the concern that the fund is going to only one
school and indicated that has been done in the past. As in City Recreation programs, there is a
limit to the number who can sign up for a class. Vintage Hills has many students who want to
participate in the program and there is no room to add students from other schools. He indicated
that the volunteers are learning how to run this program and that knowledge can be shared with
other schools and the Parks and Community Services Department. They have participated in
science fairs, demonstrated at other schools and are planning an inter-school competition next

Pleasanton City Council
Special Meeting Minutes

7 07/09/02
