Judy Etheridge, PO Box 62, Sunol, is very impressed with the number of
opportunities for the me of trails in the Pleasanton area. She end her hmbend are hikers
and oqueslrian riders end she urged the City Council to go forward end approve this trail.
This will provide the beginning of a regional trail system for the area. She believes that
moving forward on this trail system will bring more awards to the City of Pleasanton.

Valerie Raymond, 2368 Buena Vista, Livermore, urged support for the trail. She
believed they are an important quality of life issue, both regionally and locally. She
indicated that they had been promised access to the Zone 7 channels for a long time. It is
public lend, paid for by the taxpayers. They have the right to have the fullest possible me
of the property. She also commented on the Arroyo Mocho trail became it runs all the
way to Livermore. There are a number of residences alongside of it and she believes they
have all maintained open type fencing. The residents treat it as an asset to their property.
She shared her experiences with the Boise, Idaho trail system.

Karen Ellgas, 3274 Meienie Circle, said Parkside residents are not against trails.
They are only against trails that they can see end are adjacent to their backyards. She
uses the trails end her children enjoy the trails. They are not against trails end they are
not against the trail being on the Arroyo Mocho. They are only asking it be on the north
side, not the south side. She tallied the speakers tonight end indicated that 6 people who
spoke for the trails were Pleasanton residents; 11 speakers were non-Pleasenton residents.
Meny speakers said they used the trail even though it was off limits, indicating there is
little regard for residents' concerns and breaking the law. She could think of no
adventage of having the trail nm behind the Parkside residents' homes. They will not be
able to put in a gate from their yards to the trail. They have the Sports Park in their front
yard and are now being told there might be a trail in their baekyard. They moved in with
the knowledge of the Sports Park and they enjoy the Sports Park, but would like their
mediate backyard to remain private. As a neighborhood they are getting tired of
coming to City Council meetings saying the same thing over end over. In 1997 they sent
out a letter to all Parkside residents, in 1999 en updated version oftbe same letter was
sent. There are 63 homes that border the eenal. Three letters sent have had a response of
opposition from 52 residences; ten have not responded at all. One residence that borders
on the canal is in favor of the trail opening. The residents would like to stop the trail
from opening on the south side and not have to keep coming to City Council meetings.
She felt it was a money issue.

Valerie Hurst, 3593 Arbor Court, spoke in favor of the project and any portion of
the Trail Master Plan than cen be approved. She wented to put in the access to Hart
Middle School by using the pedes~en path along the Hopyard Bridge and a little portion
on the south side. She felt that opening the whole trail needed more discussion, but felt
that the City should go forward now on the premise that is being voted on tonight. The
Arroyo Mocho belongs to everyone in Pleasenton; everyone in Pleasenton has paid taxes
to support this; everyone in Pleasanton should have the ability to use it. She believes
residents should be more realistic about total public good.

Plea~nton City Council 14 07/17/01
Minutes
