Mr. Pico said the concern he is hearing is the time frame. Most of these projeets
and the funding ar~ down the road at least three and more years and some comments
made r~cently by young parents saying, pleaso l~t's have something in place for my kids
befor~ they graduate from high school. He could ~mpathiz¢ with this feeling. He
appr~iat~d staff addressing the issue of the arts program. He would like to have some
kind of a written summary done, similar to what was done for the youth program. Until
things are firmly in place, he felt it is hm~l to identify potential amounts of money to
direct into the arts program, if that is what the City wants to do.

Ms. McKeehan said that once those Master Plans are completed there would be a
better sense of what is going to go into them. The City has just begun in the last year to
talk about arts facilities with any seriousness. The reality is that even if it were to be
started tonight and a committee charged with planning something, it would take two or
three years until something would be in place. She reaffirmed that there is a lot of money
going into the direction of the ar~s and a lot of money could potentially be used for public
facilities for the arts in some form, once the City figures out what they are, and what the
consensus in the community is. It takes longer in this community because of the
involvement of the citizens having their say.

Ms. Michelotti asked about the Amador Community Park facilities plan and said
this is one area where the City has a unique opportunity because there is a facility that is
there that could be so much improved upon. Having that type of resource in the
community is something that should be closely looked at. The fact that this could be
recomqgured and actually added to would really go a long way in providing some of these
facilities.

Ms. McKeehan said she felt there were some opportunities for things that might
not be public, ally funded.

Mr. Pico mentioned to the audience that there was a public workshop that was
televised that focused strictly on the budget.

The public hearing was opened.

Lisa Dial, 260 Main Street, spoke about the Tri-Valley Visitors and Convention
Bureau. She said the TVVCB had another fantastic year and has added a golf and wine
brochure as well as a historical brochure of the Tri-Valley. The Bureau has also
increased to 75,000 the distribution of the Tri-Valley Visitor's Guide. This guide is
distributed at the San Francisco Airport, Oakland International Airport, San Francisco
Visitor's Center and many AAA offices throughout California. It is also introduced at
their promotions and is in each room of each Tri-Valley hotel member. It has also
created a new Tri-Valley film location brochure. A regional program has begun,
partnering with BART, the Oakland Airport, the Oakland Visitors and Convention
Bureau, and the Berkeley Visitors and Convention Bureau. A public relations firm will
bring in destination travel writers. A press tour was conducted in April and writers from
the New York Times, Brides Magazine, Women's Day, Wine Enthusiast, Food and

Pleaaanton City Council 8 06/19/01
Minutes
