6. PUBLIC HEARING AND OTHER MATTER <br /> <br />Item 6a <br />Approval of recommendations for use of Citizens' Options for Public Safe~. (COPS) <br />Al~prol~riation. (SR 01:052) <br /> <br /> Ms. Michelotti abstained from this item because one of the uses proposed is a <br />grant to the Valley Care Health Center and she is employed as a consultant for this <br />agency. <br /> <br />Police Chief Tim Neal presented the staff report. <br /> <br /> Mr. Campbell asked if the Students Against Drunk Driving will be included in <br />future programs as well as the Every Fifteen Minutes Program. <br /> <br />ChiefNeal said the group would be considered. <br /> <br /> Ms. Dennis appreciated the safe driver program. She asked about replacement of <br />the sidearms and whether purchases would be made from gun manufacturers that provide <br />certain safety features for consumers. <br /> <br /> Chief Neal explained that Smith and Wesson is the company that sells gunlocks <br />for existing police weapons. He is not aware of any technology that is reliable enough <br />for police use, such as the magnet rings, or other methods. There is a committee <br />examining this issue. <br /> <br /> Ms. Dennis wanted to make certain that gun manufacturers that sold safety <br />features be considered when the City is considering these purchases. She liked the <br />collapsible batons. She asked if there was any outreach program for the new slogan for <br />the patrol cars. <br /> <br /> Chief Neal said there was consideration and pointed out there are also legal <br />considerations for what goes on police cars. He indicated the Police Academy was a <br />good sounding board for public input. He said there was a local graphic artist <br />participating. <br /> <br /> Mayor Pico suggested it would be a good idea for the Human Services <br />Conunission to comment in the furore when a donation is being given to a nonprofit <br />agency. <br /> <br />Mayor Pico declared the public hearing open. <br /> <br />There being no speakers, the public heating was closed. <br /> <br />Pleasanton City Council 8 03/20/01 <br />Minutes <br /> <br /> <br />
