MINUTES <br /> of <br /> TttE MEETING <br /> of <br /> THE CITY COUNCIL <br /> <br /> Pleasanton, California <br /> December 14, 1970 <br /> <br /> CALL TO ORDER - PLEDGE TO THE FLAG <br /> <br /> Mayor Robert Reid called the Regular Meeting of the City Council to <br /> order at 8:00 P.M. and then led the pledge of allegiance to the flag. <br /> <br /> ROLL CALL <br /> <br /> City Clerk Helen McCarty called the roll which is recorded as follows: <br /> Councilmen Beratlis, Pearson and Mayor Reid were present. Councilmen <br />* Gerton and Spiliotopoulos were absent. Mr. Edgar, Assistant City Mana- <br /> ger, Mr. Hirst, City Attorney and Mr. Campbell, Director of Public Works, <br /> were present. Mr. Fales, City t4anager and Mr. Aiello, Acting Director <br /> of Planning, were absent. <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION OF INTENTION RE: ABANDONMENT OF A PORTION OF VALLEY AVENUE <br /> <br /> It was moved by Councilman Beratlis and seconded by Councilman Pearson <br /> that Resolution No. 70-244, a resolution of intention to abandon a por- <br /> tion of Valley Avenue right-of-way at the intersection of Valley Avenue <br /> and Hopyard Road, be adopted. <br /> <br /> The roll call vote was as follows: <br /> <br /> AYES: Councilmen Beratlis, . Pearson and Mayor Reid <br /> NOES: None <br /> ABSENT: Councilman Spiliotopoulos <br /> <br /> DISCUSSION RE: TRAFFIC SAFETY AT INTERSECTIONS OF VALLEY AVENUE AND <br /> NORTHWAY ROAD, A/qD BLACK AVENUE AND HARVEST ROAD. <br /> <br /> Mr. Campbell reviewed his report, dated December 10, 1970, regarding <br /> the traffic problems at Hopyard Road and Black Avenue. He explained <br /> that he had contacted the School District and they were not aware that <br /> there had been an increase in the number of children below high school <br /> age that were not being bussed. Mr. Campbell stated that the School <br /> District is re-instituting a bus service for these children. He also <br /> stated that with the new bus schedule, there is no need for any child- <br /> ren below high school level to be walking across Hopyard Road to school <br /> and that, in his opinion, this bussing is a far better solution tha~ <br /> the installation of a crosswalk. Mr. Campbell advised the Council <br /> that a definite proposal regarding the installation of sidewalks on <br /> Black Avenue will be forthcoming shortly. <br /> <br /> A number of concerned residents from the subject area spoke of the <br /> traffic conditions on Valley Avenue and asked that stop signs be in- <br /> stalled. <br /> <br /> Mr. Richard Bidstrip, Willowten Way, suggested that a new traffic <br /> survey be made before stop signs are considered. <br /> <br /> ~L~yor Reid concurred with Councilman Beratlis' suggestion that this <br /> matter be referred to the Traffic Advisory Committee for a report to the <br /> Council by January 31, 1971 and that t~ortable school crossing signs be <br /> <br /> <br />
